Self Publish

Many authors are going this route today for two reasons: it’s generally cheaper and you get a greater cut of the profits from your books, or because your book was rejected by agents or publishers. Sometimes, people just don’t like the terms of their agent or the publisher, and decide to self publish so they can keep greater control over their content. That’s not to say that self publishing is simple. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. If you want to self publish, you have to search for different platforms like Kindle or ePub or elsewhere for you to upload your book to, but you also have to figure out how to format it with a cover image, copyright info, index, etc. This is not for the faint of heart when it comes to technology. There happen to be a number of e-book “brokers” who you can pay to format your book for e-publications, as well, but that can be expensive and have the same implications as having a publishing house own the rights to your materials.

Seek Representation

This is, honestly, the most self flagellating and stressful option because you are the whim of others and their opinion of your work. However, if you had a tough skin and stand by what you’ve created, you can have a great situation after bearing a few rejections. If you get accepted by an agent, your agent will then push your book to publishing houses all over the place. Hopefully, your manuscript is good and the publishing house is willing to pay you an advance to cover the manuscript. Then, you get royalties when the book starts to sell, and hopefully it’s good enough to where it sells very well. The downside to this process is that editing tends to change the course of the story (for better, usually) and the overhead cost for publishing houses is insane, so you’re getting a very small cut of sales. As you get to be a well known author, you can renegotiate your terms and hopefully get a better cut with future books, but at first you’re making pennies on the dollar. That’s the cost of representation, but you get more exposure with representation.

As you can see, these options both have their pros and cons, and it can be difficult to choose either one. Whatever you want for your manuscript, whether it’s to have more control over it or to get more people to read it, you have to choose for you. As an author or writer, the odds are high that you just want to be able to finish your book, let alone win awards with it. But if you’ve written your book and it’s doing quite well, you might start eye balling these awesome awards.

The Booker Prize

This international book prize used to be awarded every 2 years to any book from virtually anywhere in the world, but it is now awarded every year to one book that has been translated into English. The winner gets 50,000 British pounds, and must be split between the author and the translator.

The Nobel Prize

Obviously not the Nobel Peace Prize, the Nobel Prize for literature has been awarded since 1901. It’s presented by the Swedish Academy and includes books from all over the world. In recent years, the Swedish Academy has been questioned for its bias towards political and public figures like Barack Obama and Malala Yousefzai. If you write nonfiction, this award is particularly partial to that.

Newbery Medal

If you write children’s fiction, this is the coup de gras of awards. The Association for Library Service to Children awards this one, and they have hundreds of submissions to work through every year. It’s been going since 1922 and is one of the most recognized awards on books, given that these ones are the read the most by American children and their families.

National Book Award

This award is given in four categories: fiction, nonfiction poetry, and young adult literature, making it a pretty comprehensive award no matter what you write. Each winner gets $10,000 and a huge amount of prestige.

Caldecott Medal

Like the Newbery Medal, this award is decided by The Association for Library Service to Children. It has been awarded to a picture book since 1938, and is considered the highest award for children’s fiction and picture books.

The Bram Stoker Award

If you write horror, this is the biggest award you can win. There are 12 categories, making this one of the biggest award categories out there. Whether you write horror in novel, first novel, short fiction, long fiction, fiction collection, poetry collection or anthology form, you’re eligible for this award. Naturally, Steven King and M. Night Shyamalan have won these ones.

Books are awarded by fellow fiction authors in this award ceremony, making it a highly coveted award among writers. PEN stands for playwrights, essayists, editors, and novelists, and was also named after William Faulkner, author of As I Lay Dying and others. If you want to win this award, you need to have a heavy subject, writing that is almost poetry, and an ability to withstand tons of criticism.

These are not the only book awards out there; there are many for each type of genre and ones specific to the country of the author’s origin. Many don’t even have cash awards, just the pride that comes with winning.

If you’ve decided to go the self publishing route (or nobody took your book and forced your hand), you may be staring at a bunch of different self publishing sites wondering which one will actually work for you. That all depends on your level of tech savviness, to be quite honest. You can create an account on any of these platforms and distribute your already formatted ebook this way. This is fairly cheap, and takes away all the difficult work for you – we highly recommend this option.

ISBNs

Keep in mind that you’ll need to have two different ISBNs if you plan on printing your book and e-publishing it; most ISBNs are $125 a pop, whether digital or print. If you only want to sell on Amazon, they assign you a free ASIN, but that restricts you to only using their platform. For $250, you can diversify your book and make more profit – again, we highly recommend this option.

Be Your Own Publishing House

Since many books flop and don’t ever return you money on your investment, many people have started their own e-book publishing houses. Like the different platforms you find for publishing online, you can establish yourself as an expert and start publishing for other people for a small fee. This means that you use all of the above resources, but you do it for those people we mentioned above who can barely use Facebook. Then, if their book sells, you’re making residual profits from their books and you can hopefully establish a wider client base.

That means that, should you go this route, you should spend more time and money in marketing your book properly.
